If you do not know how to use a particular tool\, or what to do in a particular situation please ask.\nDo not work too close together and be careful with rakes\, shovels\, and mattocks to avoid hitting the person next to you. When walking past another volunteer\, please say something so they know you are there.\nKnow your limits. Do not lift anything heavier than you can comfortably lift and lift with your legs not with your back.\nPace yourself. This is not a race. We will be working on and maintaining this trail for many years to come.\nTake frequent breaks. Make sure to drink plenty of water. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty.\nBe aware of hazards. There are holes in the ground to step in; branches\, rocks and roots to trip over; thorns; wasps; poison ivy (fortunately not too much of that on this segment of trail); ticks; chiggers; and other hazards.\nRemain alert and be cautious.\n\nHave a good time. This is a scenic area. There are box turtles\, heron\, woodpeckers\, hawks\, deer\, beaver\, and other wildlife in this area as well as scenic views of the lake. \nTYPICAL WORKDAY TASKS:\nTRIMMING: Cutting branches and logs across the trail.\nRAKING THE TRAIL: It is necessary to rake the trail tread clear of leaves\, branches\, other debris so that we know where we need to level the trail\, fill holes\, etc. Please use caution while raking to avoid poking others with the rake handle.\nPULLING OUT SMALL SAPLINGS FROM TRAIL TREAD: There will be some small saplings in the trail tread. If these are cut off they tend to grow back from the roots\, so we need to either pull them by hand (if they are very small)\, dig them out with a mattocks\, or if they are up to an inch in diameter\, pull them out with the weed wrench.\nFILLING HOLES: These need to be filled if they are within the 2′ wide trail tread\, or if they are within several feet of the trail on either side. These will involve digging\, moving rocks and soil\, diverting water off the trail\, removing trip rocks\, and other basic trail maintenance tasks. \nWe will also be working on removing invasive privet. Some are small and can be hand pulled\, but there are also some large privet that will need to be cut. \nWe also want to remove trash from the “wild portion of the Eno River” where the trail moves away from the river. This will be removing “dry foot” trash from along the riverbanks. Lots of plastic out there after the flooding. \nI will unfortunately be out of town\, so Bill Boyarsky and Steve Sherman will be running the workday. \nRSVP to fred.dietrich@duke.edu URL:https://mountainstoseatrail.org/event/eno-river-section-trail-workday-28/ CATEGORIES:Eno River Workday ORGANIZER;CN="Fred Dietrich":MAILTO:fred.dietrich@duke.edu END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20251025T090000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20251025T160000 DTSTAMP:20260106T233339 CREATED:20251021T223058Z LAST-MODIFIED:20251021T223058Z UID:26097-1761382800-1761408000@mountainstoseatrail.org SUMMARY:Eno River Section Workday Special Project DESCRIPTION:We had two great workdays last Saturday and Sunday. This Saturday October 25th\, meeting at 9AM behind the Eno River Association office at 4404 Guess Road in Durham we will have an additional extra workday.  We will be trying to complete the work started last Saturday\, where we made great progress rebuilding and improving a short section of trail close to the Guess Road Bridge. \nFor this project tools will be provided. You will want to wear boots or solid shoes\, work clothes\, and bring water\, work gloves\, a snack or lunch\, insect repellent. This special workday starts at 9AM. This project has been added due to the water level in the Eno being very low AND a high of 80 degrees. I want to work on pulling trash out of the Eno River. This is a wet foot project\, so we need some people willing to get wet and muddy to pull the tires and other trash out of the river\, and some people\, who might not want to go into the river\, to collect the trash and move it up to higher ground. The goal will be to get as much as we can out of the river and off the banks and up to higher ground. We will carry some of it out but will likely have to go back later to get the rest of it. This is on the “wild portion of the Eno.” \nRSVP to fred.dietrich@duke.edu URL:https://mountainstoseatrail.org/event/eno-river-section-workday-special-project-2/ CATEGORIES:Eno River Workday ORGANIZER;CN="Fred Dietrich":MAILTO:fred.dietrich@duke.edu END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20251018T090000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20251018T160000 DTSTAMP:20260106T233339 CREATED:20251013T223358Z LAST-MODIFIED:20251013T223358Z UID:26083-1760778000-1760803200@mountainstoseatrail.org SUMMARY:Eno River Section Workday Special Project DESCRIPTION:This Saturday\, October 18th 9AM meeting at 4404 Guess Road\, behind the Eno River Association office we will work on repairing the MST immediately down river from the Guess Road Bridge. This section of trail has needed some work for a while\, and was damaged during the flooding\, so we are now going to repair it and harden it against future flooding. There has also been a lot of brick/concrete/cinder block/asphalt trash in this area\, as well as other trash so we are going to work on that as well. The main task will be moving rock we had delivered down to where it is needed in wheelbarrows. Fortunately\, the rock pile is very close to the work site. \nWhile this is the most problematic portion of the MST between Old Oxford Road and Guess Road\, I had put this work on hold as the trails in the State Park have been closed. The MST from Guess Road to Pleasant Green Road is now open! Thank you state park rangers and staff for all your hard work getting this trail reopened. Thus\, it is now more important to do this work. \nRSVP to fred.dietrich@duke.edu URL:https://mountainstoseatrail.org/event/eno-river-section-workday-special-project/ ORGANIZER;CN="Fred Dietrich":MAILTO:fred.dietrich@duke.edu END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20251018T090000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20251018T150000 DTSTAMP:20260106T233339 CREATED:20250930T171947Z LAST-MODIFIED:20250930T171947Z UID:26034-1760778000-1760799600@mountainstoseatrail.org SUMMARY:Alamance County Trail Workday DESCRIPTION:The AC team is working on trail along the HAW River. If there are enough volunteers\, we will continue invasive plant removal. \nDate: Oct 11\, 9 AM – 2 PM. If you can’t stay for the entire time\, please know that we are deeply appreciative of any effort you contribute. \nMeeting Location: The Historic Occoneechee Speedway parking lot (320 Elizabeth Brady Rd\, Hillsborough). \nIf you can join the team: Please respond by email to Bill.Boyarsky@gmail.com by Oct 7 — your response informs the breakfast preparation and tools that will await you\, helps me plan the day\, and puts you on the notification list for further updates or a workday cancellation message. \nWhat to bring: You need to wear appropriate-for-the-weather work clothes (that can get dirty)\, solid shoes or boots\, and bring lunch (if you plan to work into the afternoon)\, snacks\, water\, and work gloves. If you have a favorite tool\, bring it. \nWhat we bring: We will provide all tools\, extra work gloves\, and instructions. If you are new to this kind of activity\, there will be experienced volunteers within asking distance: we are a supportive trail community that loves to grow. \nCancellation: If the workday is cancelled due to bad weather\, an email will be sent out no later than 8:00 p.m. the preceding day\, to the RSVP list. \nSafety: Use tools carefully. If you do not know how to use a particular tool\, or what to do in a particular circumstance please ask. Do not work too close together — avoid hitting the person next to you. When walking past another volunteer\, please say something so they know you are approaching. Do not lift anything heavier than you can comfortably lift — know your own limits. Take plenty of breaks. Undertake different tasks with different tools throughout the day. Make sure to drink plenty of water\, even when it’s cold outside. Be aware of holes in the ground\, briars\, ticks\, chiggers\, snakes\, stinging insects\, and poison ivy. \nThe Archaeological Conservancy project: The Archaeological Conservancy now owns the 20 acres of former CAHPT land containing historic native american settlements (and which hosts the MST) between the riverwalk and the bridge over the Eno behind Vietri\, in Hillsborough. The FMST chainsaw team has joined with TAC to start removing trees whose roots are corrupting remaining archaeological evidence. This will be a multiyear project which offers opportunity for sawyers to gain experience\, and volunteers to support another worthy project (swamping). Workdays are twice a month (one weekday\, one weekend). Most future announcements about this project will go only to those expressing interest in such mailings. We will be doing this work on Saturday\, October 4th at 9AM\, meeting at Penny’s Bend at the corner of Old Oxford Road and Snow Hill Road in Durham. We will be working on repairs to the trail. We may also do some trimming\, trash removal\, invasive species removal. \nThank you so much for all of you who came out and helped on one or more of our workdays this summer. Instead of a quiet summer\, the flooding in July resulted in significant need for trail cleanup and repairs. The MST is cleaned up and mostly repaired from Guess Road to Penny’s Bend\, and the trail is open and in use. There is still damage to repair\, some of which was there before the storm\, other problems made worse by the flooding. Much of that work is to repair the damage while it is minor\, hardening the trail\,  rather than waiting for the minor damage to become major damage after future rainstorms. \nYou will want to wear boots or solid shoes\, work clothes\, and bring water\, lunch\, insect repellent\, work gloves. We will provide the tools. In the event of bad weather an email will be sent out canceling the workday. \nRSVP for this workday to fred.dietrich@duke.edu \nWe are still working to get approval to help clear flood debris and trash and do trail repairs at Eno River State Park. We did get approval for and did one workday at ERSP\, removing trash\, clearing flood debris\, and repairing damage to one short section of Eno Trace trail. I am still pushing to get permission for additional workdays to clear debris\, repair bridges\, repair trail to help get additional trails open. The current State Parks plan is to keep the Cox Mountain Trail and possibly some other trails closed for years to come\, as they have mandated for the Pea Creek trail\, which has now been closed for some four years. I think this is unfortunate\, as the Cox Mountain Trail is one of the most popular trails in the park\, so I will keep pushing to see if it cannot be opened much sooner with our volunteer work to clear debris and make necessary repairs. \nWe still have work to do on the MST down river from ERSP but are also still hoping we can get approval to work on the trails at ERSP and will be able to do workdays there. \nSee you on the trail! \nFred \nOngoing project related to the MST: \nThere is a significant effort now going into acquiring the old Durham-Lynchburg Road rail line and converting it into a trail. \nMST birthday hike: September is the MST’s birthday month. In September 1977\, Howard Lee\, then the Secretary of the NC Department of Natural Resources and Community Development\, proposed “establishing a state trail between the mountains and the seashore in North Carolina.” We will celebrate this birthday with a two mile hike starting from the West Point on the Eno’s north parking lot (5244 North Roxboro Street\, Durham 36.07430203161701\, -78.90956429833814) at 9 AM on Sept 20. If you would like to join this hike\, please RSVP to Bill.Boyarsky@gmail.com. As always\, this adds your email to the list in case of a rain cancellation. \nDurham-to-Roxboro Rail Trail One of the improvements to the MST in Durham involves finding an alternative to the dangerous crossing of the Eno on the Old Oxford road\, next to Penny’s Bend. Many of you know that there is an unused railroad line with a 100+ year old bridge crossing the river not far downriver. A coalition of partners are actively researching the possibility of purchasing this 26 mile rail line and converting it into a multi-use path\, which would include the MST usage of this bridge. This effort is at a critical stage and could benefit from public support. Read more about this: https://indyweek.com/news/durham/durham-to-roxboro-rail-trail-input/ Consider attending one of the events to express your support. \nNext Orange County MST workdays (RSVP to Bill)\nOct 11\nNov 8\nDec 13 \nIf you are not on our Eno/Orange County workday announcements email list (to get announcements like this one)\, but would like to be\, let me know by email. \nNext Eno MST workdays (RSVP to Fred )\nSept 27\nOct 4\nNov 1\nDec 6 \nNext Alamance County MST workdays (RSVP to Andrew ).\nThe AC team is working on trail along the Haw River. Or about Friends of the MST\, the nonprofit group that supports the trail? \nThe MST stretches 1\,175 miles from the Great Smoky Mountains to the Outer Banks\, passing many of our state’s most beautiful places and connecting dozens of communities along the way. \nFriends of the MST is the growing community of members and volunteers who support the trail and work statewide building and maintaining trail\, encouraging communities to create new sections of trail\, and helping people hike it. \nJoin us at 6pm on July 30 at the public library in Boone (140 Queen Street\, Boone\, NC 28607) to hear the latest status on the MST in the mountains after Helene\, learn about the history of the MST\, how to hike it\, current projects underway to improve the trail\, how you can get involved with local trail efforts and more. We’ll also hear from Randy Johnson\, author of numerous hiking books\, longtime trail volunteer and Friends of the MST board member. \nEvent is free and open to the public. We’ll also have a door prize drawing for our guidebook Great Day Hikes on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. \nRegistration is not required\, but helpful for planning purposes. Note that West Point on the Eno is still closed on the south side of the river. There are two areas where some work will be needed to get the trail reopened\, but generally the trail seems to have come through the flooding fine. \nThere is still some pushback at Durham Parks and Recreation to reopening the MST at West Point\, so we may not be able to clear debris off the trail next Thursday. Thus there is a plan B\, which is to finish up removing trash from the River Forest section of trail\, down river from West Point. We might not know until Thursday morning which of these projects we will be doing. We need to do both projects\, though I would prefer to start with opening the trail. \nThank you so much to all of you who came out last weekend and worked to open the trail from Old Oxford Road (Penny’s Bend) to Roxboro Street. An incredible amount of work\, and the trail is now open to use\, though still a bit muddy in places. \nOver the past days I have walked that trail and noted the locations where we need to do trail repairs\, repairs that can wait until cooler weather. This morning during the short period of time I was on the trail\, I saw five runners\, two people walking dogs\, and two other people out walking the trail. The trail is back in use! \nFor either of these projects you will want to bring water\, work gloves\, and wear long pants\, boots or solid shoes\, and bring insect repellent. Working safely is our highest priority\, and the main hazard right now is the hot weather. \nRSVP for the Thursday\, July 24th special workday to fred.dietrich@duke.edu URL:https://mountainstoseatrail.org/event/eno-river-special-workday/ CATEGORIES:Eno River Workday ORGANIZER;CN="Fred Dietrich":MAILTO:fred.dietrich@duke.edu END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
